"As other people have answered, there are many books to get started.
There’s also some good entry level courses available like John Carlton’s Simple Writing Method and the central pillar of the american copywriter, the AWAI.
If I was to start from scratch I’d do this:
  1. Look for great copywriters in the past and present. Some I can suggest are Gary Halbert, John Carlton, Gary Bencivenga, Brian Kurtz, Joe Vitale, Joe Sugarman, Joe Polish and Dean Jackson (ilovemarketing.com) and Colin Theriot if you’re into online copywriting (like email). There are many others.
  2. If some are still active, look for them in Facebook and see if they have or are in any groups.
  3. Start leeching on the content people share in those groups and asking and commenting whenever you need.
  4. Look for their advertisements in sites like swiped.co.
  5. Really, really, really study them. Even writing them by hand word by word by word. You need to find the greatest direct response ads ever and know them by heart.
About books/newsletters I’d start with only a few:
  1. Eugene Schwartz, The Brilliance Breakthrough. Eugene is considered one of the greatest copywriters of all time and he’s famous for breeding life to Boardroom. This book will help you communicate a lot better, but it’s hard to find.
  2. Eugene Schwartz, Breakthrough Advertising. An absolute classic. The first three chapters are the crux of Direct Response. Also a little difficult to find.
  3. Claude Hopkins, Scientific Advertising. Probably the godfather of Direct Response literature. The main two lessons of this book is to treat your advertisement like a salesman and to make it service the customer. This book is easy to find (even for free).
  4. Joe Sugarman, Triggers. Joe is one of the bigger names in the field and his literature is spot on to understand the psychology behind copy. Even if you can’t find this book, get everything you can from him.
  5. Gary Bencivenga, Marketing Bullets. It is a series of blog posts that this Ogilvy and Mather ad-man from the golden age wrote. I believe there’s 29 of them and each one is pure gold.
  6. Gary Halbert, The Gary Halbert Letter. There’s a website with a selection of some of his newsletters. All of them are fabulous and enlighting. If you want them ALL you’ll need to buy them from his son Bond Halbert.
  7. Joe Vitale, Hypnotic Copywriting. A very nice book that introduces you to hooks, connectors and other copy tricks to keep your reader engaged. Joe is one of those “holistic” people that can be seen a little weird and self-promotional, but he’s very good.
  8. John Caples, Tested Advertisement Methods. A classic book with success formulas. A lot is argued if they are still relevant but that depends on how saturated and exposed is your niche to them and how burned is the idea behind each formula by now. Still, it is better to know this stuff.
  9. Dan Kennedy, The Ultimate Sales Letter. This book is some sort of template to build great sales letters. Dan Kennedy is one of those people you learn to love regardless of his blunt facade. By the way, all books from his No B.S. series should be read. Dan Kennedy is a strategic thinker that goes beyond copy and into marketing and selling psychology to be able to influence better your audience.
  10. Joe Karbo, The Lazy Man Way To Riches. Regardless of the title, this 1973 book presents you with the ways of direct response. All the great copywriters have been influenced by this book.
  11. BONUS. David Ogilvy, Ogilvy on Advertising. This book has been my personal mentor for quite a while. David linked together brand advertising with direct response because, on his own words, “direct response people actually know what they’re doing”.
If you can find more books on each of these authors, get them. Every great copywriter build his own library, and some of them are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars."
